Myths have always chased hypnosis and its healing offshoot, hypnotherapy. People either believe them to be bordering on occult, or don’t consider them to be genuine scientific endeavours. Following are some of the well known myths about hypnosis and the truth behind them.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with magic spells of any kind. It borders more on the science of the human mind and is very simple to practice for anyone who is willing to learn it. The authenticity of hypnosis is doubted even by people who have seen it working on subjects. They say that hypnotised people allow practitioners to perform well in their art by not displaying enough mental strength to block the effect of their words. But that is not true at all. Hypnosis can be exercised on anyone irrespective of his or her levels of will power.

Another belief is that hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness, which again is a serious misconception. A hypnotized individual is fully alert of what is going on in his surroundings. Hypnosis actually brings forth a state of absolute calm characterized by a rise in levels of attentiveness, and this heightened awareness helps the subject to receive suggestions without difficulty.

Some scientific findings have stated that only about 5% of humanity is capable of being hypnotized, which is the third misconception on this list. The scientists are to some extent true in their own way, because they attempted hypnotising the group by the same hypnosis technique without acknowledging individual differences in character and temperament. People differ in their natures and personalities, and therefore there have to be different hypnosis techniques to suit the temperaments of different individuals.

Meditation and hypnosis are often confused with each other. However, meditation is essentially a personal feeling that has got no involvement of communication, while communication is a fundamental part of any successful hypnosis. Trance too has no connection with hypnosis at all. Just like meditation, trance is a state of mind, and it is not associated with communication in any manner, on the other hand the very crux of the hypnosis technique is communication.

A majority of people believe that it is not possible to bring about alterations in one’s appearance and behaviour through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is clearly not wizardry that it can transform the physique of an individual just like that. But by mentally conditioning a person to abandon addictive habits like overeating and constant smoking, and by raising one’s inspiration levels, hypnosis can bring about significant physical alterations in an individual and ensure a healthier body.

Undergoing hypnotherapy is a fine way to lead a richer and satisfying life, and thus one must not pay heed to the misconceptions, and go for hypnotic sessions with an open mind.
