Christian counselors provide help for many people who are facing challenges and struggles in their daily lives. Many people turn to counselors to get that experienced perspective that they can trust. Unlike a secular counselor, the Christian counselor’s advice will be rooted in biblical teachings and principles.

For those of you who are facing challenges and considering a visit to a Christian counselor, here are some things that you can keep in mind to get more out of your time with the counselor.

1. Be Consistent

One of the big keys to having an effective experience with a Christian counselor is to strive for consistency. The things that you discuss with the counselor will build from one appointment to the next and taking long breaks between appointments will usually break the flow and it will also negatively impact you in your daily life. If there is something that you are struggling with and you are seeking advice from a counselor, make a commitment to prioritizing your appointments and their importance.

2. Pray on Your Own

Christian counselors typically emphasize the importance of prayer with their clients. Whether you are in session with the counselor or on your own facing a difficult situation, make prayer a part of your life and ask for God’s help in properly dealing with the issues that you are facing.

3. Be Open and Willing to Change

Human nature is to look at others and see how they have contributed to the struggles that we are facing in our lives. But rather than focusing on how others are responsible for the difficulties in our lives, it is more productive to keeping an open mind to how we can improve the situation by responding in the most effective way. Rather than focusing externally, be willing to change yourself if you realize that you are not handling the situation in the most effective way.

4. Listen

Since you are going to the effort and expense to see a counselor, it’s a waste if you are not willing to really listen to what the counselor is saying. In most cases the counselor will want you to do most of the talking during the session, but when they provide advice or guidance be certain that you are listening to them.

5. Keep Your Focus on Things that are Within Your Control

Everyone faces challenges, difficulties, struggles and frustrations that are outside of our own control. Avoid the temptation to dwell on these things that you cannot change and place your emphasis on improving yourself and working on the things that you can control. When this is the case your overall attitude will improve and you’ll find that you are impacted less by the things that you cannot control.
